Neal Baisi Athletic Center
The Neal Baisi Athletic Center was designed specifically to meet the needs of the students and student-athletes at WVU Tech. Built in 1968, the building has three floors, providing both offices for its coaches and Athletic Coaching Education lecturers and athletic venues that are among the best in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In addition to a 2,000-seat gymnasium, the Neal Baisi Athletic Center houses a Wellness Center, swimming pool, a fully-equipped weight room and a the Kelley Hall of Fame Room filled with the accomplishments of WVU Tech’s student-athletes and coaches.
The structure earned its name in 2000 from the late Neal Baisi, a long-time friend of WVU Tech athletics. Mr. Baisi was a former coach, athletic director and lecturer at WVU Tech and gained national fame when he published his book, Coaching the Zone and Man-to Man Pressing Defenses. Authoring the book was not his only accomplishment; indeed, the coach led WVU Tech to 319-76 overall record in his twelve years at the helm of the men’s basketball team. He won four conference championships (1956-57, 1957-58, 1963-65) and two state tournaments (1955-56, and 1962-63).
Astonishingly, Coach Baisi, who was often affectionately called Papa Bear, accomplished his feats with local talent from Montgomery. Coach Baisi graduated from WVU Tech in 1950 and has been honored several times by his alma mater. Mr. Baisi was named WVU Tech Alumni of the Year in 1989. He was later inducted as a student into the Kelley Hall of Fame in 1989 and again as a coach in 1998.

Kelley Hall of Fame
Dedicated on July 15, 1995, the WVU Tech Hall of Fame Room was established to honor past student-athletes, coaches, administrators and friends of the athletic program who worked tirelessly for, and in the name of, WVU Tech. Located on the third floor of the Neal D. Baisi Athletic Center and adjacent to the gymnasium, the Hall of Fame room serves as a meeting space for both the athletic department and the physical education department, as well as a hospitality area for various athletic functions. More importantly, however, the Hall of Fame room honors those who have made outstanding contributions both on and off the field of play to Tech athletics. The 103 members of the Hall of Fame have his or her name proudly displayed on a beautiful plaque on one wall of the Hall of Fame room.
The Hall of Fame room is also home to many of the awards earned by the Golden Bear teams over the years. A lighted display case houses over 100 trophies, plaques and certificates awarded to teams and individuals at Tech since the beginning of the athletic program. Also on display is the Olympic Uniform worn by Tech alumnus Mike Barrett in 1968.
In February of 2009, the WVU Tech Hall of Fame Room was renamed as the Kelley Hall of Fame Room in honor of Tech Alumn and former Golden Bear Athletic Director, Pete Kelley and his wife, Sue Kelley.
Because of areas like the Hall of Fame room, the current Tech community can remember and honor the past accomplishments that have paved the way for the future of Tech athletics. Our history is rich, and we will continue to honor those who have played an intergral part in the strong tradition that is WVU Tech.
