Montgomery, WV –
It only took about 9 minutes for the Golden Bears to get onto the board against Georgetown College Friday, but it took 81 minutes of a solid defensive team effort for the WVU Tech Men’s Soccer team to hang on for a crucial Mid-South Conference victory.
After nearly a month of waiting, the showdown with Georgetown College finally happened Friday; and eight minutes and fifty eight seconds into the game, Tech’s Orlando Melado scored the games only goal. Melado let go of a left footed volley from about 20 yards out that found its way by Georgetown goalie, John Carpenter, into the lower 90 for the score.
Tech’s John Dunn had a solid game in goal for the Golden Bears, denying the Tigers 7 times in his third shut out of the season; Dunn’s last shut out came on September 13th against Urbana University.
The victory advances the Golden Bears to 9-6-1 on the season and 3-3 in the Mid-South and puts WVU Tech in position to possibly move up the MSC standings to host a first round MSC playoff game.
But, in order to accomplish that, a lot has to happen. Campbellsville faces off against Georgetown College Friday, at Georgetown. A Tiger win would drop Campbellsville to 3-3 in the MSC, making Tech’s showdown with Campbellsville Wednesday a battle for the right to host a first round MSC play off game. The Cumberlands, currently 4th in the MSC Standings and face St. Catharine Monday.
Kick off for Wednesday’s game is 3:00pm and will be played at Schoenbaum Stadium in Charleston.
