In what has traditionally been a difficult match up for the Golden Bears, a banged up Tech squad took to Martin Field with a few tricks up their sleeve. The Golden Bears came out in the first half in at least 3 completely different offensive personnel sets and played Georgetown College (7-4, 4-2) nearly even for the first half of play.
The Tech defense came out on fire to begin the game, forcing Georgetown to punt on their first two possessions before Jordan Kramer found daylight on a pitch and scampered 16 yards for the games first score.
Tech would go three and out on their next possession only to have their defense step up in a huge way. Chris Gray forced a Georgetown turnover on third and four that was recovered by Golden Bear Senior, Gary Joshway. WVU Tech would put together a 7 play, 44 yard drive that ended with the Golden Bear’s first touchdown of the game courtesy of a Michael Scott pass to Josh Humphry on third and goal from the six yard line.
Georgetown would score again with six minutes remaining in the half with Dustin Menetrey ending their 7 play, 51 yard drive to put the Tigers ahead 14-7. But the lead would be short lived as the Golden Bears took the ensuing possession and created three big plays to tie the game again at 14 a piece. Michael Scott found JaJuan Smith on second and 10 for a 19 yard gain, then Georgetown was called for a late hit on third and two on Tech’s Jamel Shelton for a 16 yard gain. Michael Scott then connected with Gary Joshway for the 14 yard equalizer with 1:36 remaining in the half.
The Tigers would answer Tech’s big-play drive with one of their own to close the half when Mike Lewis carried the ball for a 22 yard gain on second and ten from the 50 yard line. Lewis then connected with Rob Madden for a 15 yard gain on third and 15 and then connected again with Nik Blair on the following play for an 11 yard gain. The Tigers would find the end zone with 13 second remaining on the clock to take a 21-14 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Golden Bears would begin the second half much like they began the game, as their offense was forced to punt on their first possession. The Tech defense came up big again on the Tigers’ first play from scrimmage when Kendall Beverage forced a Georgetown fumble that was recovered by Jonathon Frierson at the Georgetown 37 yard line.
But the Tech offense came up short twice on third and one 1 and fourth and one when they tried to extend their drive from the Georgetown 28 yard line, turning the ball over to the Tigers on downs for the first time in the game.
Georgetown took advantage of the Golden Bear turnover and turned it into an 8 play, 72 yard drive to extend their lead to 28-14.
The Tiger struck again with 5:40 remaining in the third when a Michael Scott pass that was intended for Rashard Gould was picked off by DaVon Pitts at the Tech 36 yard line. Pitts returned the interception for Georgetown’s 5th score of the game, and from there, the wheels began to fall off for the Golden Bears.
Georgetown would score again with 3:08 remaining in the third quarter to make it a 41-14 ballgame and again with 9:29 remaining in the fourth quarter when acting QB, JaJuan Smith was sacked in the end zone for a safety.
Sophomore QB, Michael Scott led all Golden Bears with 15 of 24 passing for 101 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Tech receiver, Joey Christian led all receivers for the game, catching 5 passes for 46 yards.
Senior Ben Harper recorded 7 tackles for the Golden Bears including 1 sack while Jordan Bodnar and Michael Peeples also made it to the Georgetown QB to record 1 sack each. Gary Joshway and Jonathon Frierson both recovered 1 fumble a piece for the Tech defense while senior Jahi Sherard contributed 9 tackles with 1 pass breakup on the game. Cecil Level led the Golden Bear defense with 13 tackles on the day.
The 43-14 defeat closes the Golden Bear’s season with a 3-8, 0-6 record.
