The Golden Bears will have their hands full for their first Mid-South Conference game of the season when the Cavaliers from UVa-Wise come to Martin Field to try and hand Tech their first loss of the season.
WVU Tech is coming off of an entertaining road win against Olivet Nazarene University last Saturday. Golden Bear Quarterback, Michael Scott, broke his own single-game passing mark with 519 yards and six touchdowns against the Tigers to earn NAIA Offensive Player of the Week as well as MSC Offensive Player of the Week. The Cross Lanes, W.Va., sophomore quarterback, completed 28 of 45 (62.2%) passes with no interceptions and accounted for 564 yards of Tech’s total offense in the 61-38 victory.
Tech running back Jamel Shelton also had a break out game last week, rushing for 140 yards on 19 carries. Watch for Coach Tinsley and company to look to get Shelton involved with the offense early to keep the Cavaliers defense honest.
The Golden bear defense will have their hands full again this weekend as they try and contain a UVa-Wise offense that exploded for 48 points in their first victory of the season. Watch for freshman defensive lineman, Michael Awute to put pressure on the Cavaliers’ offensive line to get to the quarterback. Awute is coming off a 2-sack debut against Olivet Nazarene last week.
UVa-Wise heads into Saturday’s match up looking to pick up their second win of the season. The Cavs picked up their first win last week over Newport News in their home opener, 48-0. Wise’s two defeats this season came on the road, dropping a 27-34 decision to Seton Hill College and a 57-7 loss to #10 Union College.
Saturday’s game should prove to be an offensive showcase for both teams as the top two Mid-South Conference’s offensive players face off. Tech’s Michael Scott ranks first in the MSC in yards per game while UVa-Wise’s quarterback, Brad Robbins, ranks second in the conference thanks to a talented receiving corps.
Robbins has 4 (Lovett, Barbour, Evans, and Abdul-Saboor) targets that each has over 160 yards receiving this season. Lovett recently became the Cavaliers third current receiver to have over 2,000 career yards receiving. Barbour and Evans have both already surpassed the 2,000 yard receiving mark.
The Golden Bears and Cavaliers have faced off a total of 4 times heading into Saturday’s match up with Wise coming out on top all 4 times. The two teams most recent meeting took place last season when Tech traveled to the Wise, Virginia campus; the Cavs came out on the winning end of a 62-33 offensive shoot out.
