Summersville, WV-
The WVU Tech women entered into Wednesday’s game against Mountain State in search of their first win of the season. Despite already experiencing some success this season, recording 2 ties against Shawnee State and Milligan, the Golden Bears had yet to break into the win column. After Wednesday, Tech had to search no more after putting together a dominating performance for 90 minutes.
The Golden Bears wasted no time getting on the board against the Cougars, scoring in the 21st minute on a Laura Spiers goal. Ten minutes later, Shaniece Thorpe found Hannah Jaskot to give Tech a 2-0 lead over Mountain State heading into half time.
The second half scoring was opened up in the 77th minute by the Cougars when Shamyra Coleman found the back of the net to pull her team within 1. But that was as close at Mountain State would come as Tech answered 8 minutes later when Hannah Jaskot and Sandra Villavicencio teamed up to find Shaniece Thorpe for Tech’s 3rd goal of the game. Thorpe struck again 3 minutes later thanks to a Laura Spiers feed for the final goal of the game.
The 4-1 victory propels the Golden Bears (1-2-2) into the win column for the first time in the 2009 season.
Tech will be back in action Saturday when they open up Mid-South play against St. Catharine College. Kick off is scheduled for 3:00pm at the YMCA Complex in Beckley.
